I am an environmental epidemiologist. My research focus is to contribute knowledge to estimate the burden of non-communicable disease due to air pollution in South Africa and neighbouring countries, whilst training the next generation of researchers. My academic background in chemistry, biochemistry, chemical pathology, biostatistics, epidemiology and public health equips me with a unique set of skills that distinguishes my research from other researchers in South Africa. My research contributes to the realisation of some of the sustainable development goals, namely SDG 3 (dealing with human health) and SDG 11 (dealing with sustainable cities and communities). My research findings also serve as evidence to update the South African air quality standards to be more protective. These air quality standards are enforced by the Air Quality Act.
