Florence Mazwi MurungweniDr. Murungweni is a Lecturer in the Department of Geography & Environmental Sciences in the Faculty of Science, Engineering, and Agriculture at the University of Venda. She has worked in both government and private sectors of the developed (Netherlands, Scotland) and developing world (Zimbabwe and South Africa). Her specific knowledge is in applying modern technologies, such as remote sensing and geographical information systems to various societal sectors. As a problem solver, she completed EU-funded research at the Forestry Commission, Scotland, where she critically analyzed some models used to assess forest growth during climate change. In 2015, she successfully led a GIS team in a community engagement project on school garden nutrition for the Sibasa circuit in Limpopo Province. Dr. Murungweni holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences, an M.Sc. in Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation specializing in Natural Resources Management, a B.Sc. in Geography and Environmental Studies, and a Diploma in GIS and Cartography. She is a registered member of the South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions and the South Africa Wetlands Society. Dr. Murungweni’s current research interests are the ecological restoration of freshwater wetland ecosystems, climate change impacts, and land use/ cover changes.
